A Question I Don't Know The Answer To...

Just the other day I was perusing my latest copy of Arquivos de Neuro-Psiquiatria, the official journal of the Brazilian Academy of Neurology, when a particular study caught my eye. It asked a very pointed question that intrigued me - one that, I must admit, had never crossed my mind.

There are times in life when you just don't know the answer. Just admit it; the worst thing you can do is to try and act like you do. This case study is one of those times.

Drs. Silva, Alvarenga, Fernandez,Fernandez, Alvarenga and Thuler, based on their exhaustive research, posed this question: Does eating animal brains cause multiple sclerosis?

I have to admit, my answer to this question is: I don't know.

I also don't know if eating animal brains gives you a stomach ache, shingles, or bad breath. And I seriously doubt I will ever be able to personally answer any of these questions.

According to the study, people who consume animal brains are 3-4 times more likely to get MS than people who do not consume animal brains.

Now, Dr. Julie Stachowiak, of the website ms.about.com, points out there is also a study from Mexico that showed that people who ate cow brains and pig brains were not at increased risk of getting MS. And since the Brazilian study did not delineate based on type of brain eaten, apparently, more research is needed.

Just not by me.
